ABOUT THE FOUNDER/INSTRUCTOR

Jackie Dowsett is an island girl, growing up dancing on both Oahu and Maui, before leaving to get her BFA in Dance Performance and her Elementary Education Teaching Certification at Southern Methodist University (SMU), in Dallas, TX.  After graduating, she soon became a professional dancer, living in NYC, LA, Las Vegas, and Miami. She retired from performing and came home to Hawaii after touring as a back up dancer for Cher in '14 and was blessed with a baby girl in early 2017. Prior to the 6 years dancing for Cher, Jackie “kicked it up” as a Radio City Rockette for 6 seasons, did multiple Musical Theater productions during her time in NYC, and also danced in numerous films and on TV in the first 3 seasons of Glee, when living in Los Angeles.

Ms Jackie has been teaching dance and choreographing musicals in her spare time at her alma mater, Punahou School, as well as various other Oahu based dance schools.  Early classical training on Oahu, was with Hawaii State Ballet and jazz and hip hop with 24-7 Danceforce. She fell in love with musical theater when she was 6, while taking classes and performing with Maui Youth Theater, now MAPA, and is happy to be making a "full circle" moment, since she is now teaching at MAPA and enjoyed being a part of The Nutcracker this past holiday season.

"Hawaii has a tremendous passion for dance and the arts, and I know how impactful it can be on a young person's life. I look forward to building the dance ohana on Maui and sharing my expertise, passion, and love of dance and theater to the next generation of Hawaii's youth, and hope to be a mentor to those that wish to reach for their own dreams!”

**Ms Jackie is CPR certified

Ballet is the foundation of most dance forms and will maximize technique and longevity in a career of dance. Learning classical ballet will help girls and boys with posture, flexibility, musicality, core strength, balance, self-discipline, grace, self-confidence, poise, and most importantly, the technique needed to be proficient in all other areas of dance and gymnastics.  Ballet is also used as an excellent way to cross-train, improving sports skills (see also the Dance for Athletes class) Portable ballet barres can be brought in to turn any room into a dance space.

Dance for Athletes

DANCE FOR ATHLETES

Grades 6-12th

Ballet classes are the perfect addition to cross training for any sport.  There are myriad ways that ballet-based techniques and exercises can translate to better performance on the field or court: injury prevention, balance, increasing flexibility and athletic posture, full-body coordination, sense of timing and rhythm, increasing body awareness and confidence, spontaneity in movement, and working those small muscle groups that are rarely used.  Most athletes aren’t used to working in turned out positions, but doing so strengthens muscles that are beneficial for quick, lateral movements.  Ballet helps athletes become more physically and mentally flexible and diversified to apply strength to a wider variety of movements within the sport.  This class can be given as a general introduction for students in all sports, or can be catered for any individual sport, i.e. Dance for Football, Dance for Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer etc.
